Internet connectivity – As a digital nomad, internet connectivity is crucial. Ensure the location you choose has reliable and high-speed internet access. While we checked to ensure that each location on our list offers wifi, it’s essential to research the particulars.

Culture and activities – Living as a digital nomad allows you to explore new cultures and participate in exciting activities. Choose a location that offers unique experiences and opportunities for exploration.

Climate – Climate plays a significant role in one’s comfort, especially if you plan on staying in a location for an extended period. Choose a location with weather conditions that align with your preferences.

Healthcare – Access to quality healthcare is essential. Check if your chosen location has hospitals or medical facilities that can provide adequate care.

This digital nomad life is fantastic. We’ve told you all about it in How To Become A Digital Nomad And Work From Anywhere In The World. And we’ve given you the best occupations for travelers in Best Work From Home Jobs for Digital Nomads

As digital nomads, we tend to move around frequently, searching for the perfect location to work from. It can be easy to get caught up in the chase and forget to take care of your well-being in the process. But if you want to be successful in your work, it’s crucial to cultivate wellness and mindfulness, even while you’re on the road. This installment in our digital nomad series will look at mindful nomading: cultivating wellness and mindfulness on the road.

What Is a Digital Nomad?

Before we get into wellness and mindfulness, just in case this is your first article in our digital nomad series, let’s catch you up.

A digital nomad is an individual who leverages technology to work remotely while leading a location-independent lifestyle. They rely on digital tools such as laptops, smartphones, and the internet to conduct their work, enabling them to be untethered from a traditional office environment. These road warriors embrace the freedom and flexibility to choose their desired location, often traveling and exploring various destinations while maintaining their careers and connections.

Digital nomads typically engage in online businesses, freelancing, remote work, or entrepreneurship, allowing them to earn an income from anywhere in the world at any time. They work across a range of industries, including writing, programming, design, consulting, teaching, or marketing. The digital nomad lifestyle grants them the opportunity to experience diverse cultures and immerse themselves in new environments.

While the concept of being a digital nomad has gained popularity in recent years, it requires a self-disciplined approach to work and a strong ability to manage one’s time and resources effectively. But for those seeking a blend of work and adventure, the digital nomad lifestyle offers a unique way to embrace both personal and professional growth.

What is Mindfulness?

The digital nomad lifestyle offers unparalleled opportunities for freedom, exploration, and personal growth. But as you traverse the globe while working remotely, it’s crucial to prioritize your well-being and embrace mindfulness practices to maintain balance and enhance your overall wellness. By incorporating mindful habits into your daily routine, you can optimize your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying deliberate attention to the present moment without judgment. It involves cultivating awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. By observing experiences as they unfold, mindfulness helps individuals develop a greater sense of clarity, calmness, and acceptance. It encourages living in the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

How To Be a Mindful Nomad: Tips for Cultivating Wellness and Mindfulness on the Road

Now that you have an idea what mindfulness is, let’s look at how to incorporate it into your daily life. Here are some valuable tips on how to cultivate wellness and mindfulness on the road:

Establish a Morning Routine

Start your day with intention by creating a morning routine that sets a positive tone for the rest of your day. Begin with activities that promote mindfulness, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling. Engaging in these practices helps you cultivate a calm and focused mindset, setting the stage for a productive and fulfilling day ahead.

Prioritize Movement

Long hours of sitting in front of a screen can take a toll on your physical well-being. Make it a priority to incorporate regular movement into your daily routine. Take breaks to stretch, go for walks, or engage in physical activities that you enjoy. Moving your body not only improves physical fitness but also enhances mental clarity and reduces stress.

Disconnect from Technology

While technology is essential for your remote work, it’s crucial to disconnect regularly to avoid burnout and overwhelm. Set boundaries by scheduling regular “tech detox” periods where you switch off from devices and immerse yourself in the present moment. Engage in activities like reading a book, exploring nature, or spending quality time with loved ones. By disconnecting from technology, you can recharge your mind and foster deeper connections with yourself and the world around you.

Cultivate Mindful Eating Habits

When traveling, it’s easy to get caught up in trying local delicacies or relying on fast food options. However, mindful eating plays a significant role in your overall well-being. Prioritize nourishing your body with wholesome, balanced meals. Explore local markets to discover fresh produce and try to cook your own meals whenever possible. Practice mindful eating by savoring each bite, chewing slowly, and paying attention to the flavors and textures. By honoring your body’s nutritional needs, you will have more energy, enhance your digestion, and support your overall well-being.

Embrace Cultural Immersion

One of the perks of being a digital nomad is the opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultures. Make an effort to engage with the local community, learn about their traditions, and embrace new experiences. Attend cultural events, explore historical sites, or participate in local volunteer activities. By embracing cultural immersion, you foster a deeper connection to the places you visit, expand your horizons, and enrich your overall travel experience.

Practice Gratitude and Reflection

Cultivating gratitude and reflection are powerful tools for maintaining a positive mindset and enhancing overall well-being. Set aside time each day to meditate. Reflect on your experiences, express gratitude for the opportunities and blessings in your life, and acknowledge your achievements.

Consider keeping a gratitude journal to capture moments of appreciation and personal growth. By incorporating these practices, you shift your focus towards the positive aspects of your journey, fostering a sense of fulfillment and contentment.

Seek Community and Connection

Although the digital nomad lifestyle offers freedom, it’s essential to foster a sense of community and connection. Engage with other digital nomads, either through online communities or local meetups. Attend co-working spaces, participate in networking events, or join interest-based groups to connect with like-minded individuals.

Sharing experiences, insights, and challenges with others who understand your lifestyle can provide support, motivation, and a sense of belonging.

Study Mindfulness

Studying mindfulness involves a deliberate and systematic approach to understanding and practicing this transformative concept. Begin by reading books or taking online courses that provide a comprehensive introduction to mindfulness. Engage in guided meditation sessions to develop a foundation in mindfulness techniques. Attend workshops or join mindfulness-based programs to deepen your understanding and receive expert guidance.

Regular self-reflection and journaling can also aid in integrating mindfulness into your daily life. Remember, consistent practice and an open mindset are key to fully embracing and benefiting from the study of mindfulness.

*Tip – The Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation offers some excellent online tools for mindfulness practice and meditation.

Closing Thoughts

Being a mindful digital nomad involves consciously nurturing your well-being amidst the excitement and challenges of a nomadic lifestyle. By implementing these tips, you can cultivate balance, presence, and overall wellness while exploring the world.

Remember, finding a harmonious blend of work, travel, and self-care is key to unlocking the full potential of the mindful digital nomad lifestyle. So embrace the journey with intention, and may your path be filled with wellness, fulfillment, and endless possibilities.

Ah, summer! The time of picnics, the beach, hiking, and camping. We love getting out and doing stuff when the sun is bright, and the grass is green. And who doesn’t like sleeping outdoors and under the stars? But if you’re on a tight budget, the costs of gas, food, and gear can be a lot.

The good news is that it is possible to have a fantastic summer camping adventure without breaking the bank. With a bit of creativity and planning, you can find ways to save money on almost every aspect of your trip, and we are here to help. From finding free campsites to cheap ways to stay cool, we’ve got you covered. Today, we’ll give you some expert tips for how to survive summer on a shoestring budget.

Finding Your Campsite

When planning your summer camping experience, finding your campsite should come first. Location, amenities, size, and cost will all help you determine how to pack and what you will need later on.

The cost of a campsite typically depends on the location. If you’re camping on public lands, such as a national or state park, it may cost more than camping on private land. Any amenities (such as running water and electricity) will also affect how much you pay for the site.

For the shoestring budget camper, free works best. The state of Utah, for example, allows primitive and free camping on any land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Websites like Campendium offer features that let you find free campsites by state. Others, such as BoondockersWelcome, list thousands of locations on private property with free overnight RV parking.

Private camping can also be an excellent way to go. These sites typically cost a bit more than national or state parks charge. However, websites like HiCamp allow you to find campsites owned by individuals or private campgrounds so you can compare costs and find the cheapest spot to set up camp.

When looking for your campsite, be sure to do your homework. Know the rules and regulations of the campsite you are visiting. Make sure that you are aware of all fees associated with a particular spot before you venture out. And be sure to travel with enough money to cover any unexpected expenses.

Shoestring Budget Camping Gear

You don’t need to spend a ton of money on gear to have a great camping trip. With some creativity and planning, you can find all the necessary equipment for a fraction of the cost. Here’s what you’ll need to consider when packing for your trip.

The Tent – Assuming you are not RV camping, the first thing you will need is a tent. When buying a camping tent, it is crucial to consider both the quality and the price. There are a few things you can do to save money when making this purchase.

  • Be sure to shop around and compare prices from different retailers. You may be able to find a better deal online or at a store in your local area.
  • Consider buying a used tent. This can be a great way to save money, as long as you inspect the tent carefully before making your purchase.
  • Look for coupons or sales when shopping for tents. Many stores offer discounts on camping gear, so be sure to check for these before completing your purchase.

Sleepgear – Typically, half of a camping trip is sleeping. You must be comfortable and warm. But there is no need to run out and grab expensive sleeping bags and cots. You will save a lot of money and secure your comfort by bringing your own blankets, and lots of them. After all, the cost of laundering your sleep gear after you get home will be far less than the cost of buying new stuff.

Basic Supplies – After the tent and sleepwear, there are just a few more basic supplies that are camping necessities. To stay within budget, use items that you already have, shop yard sales and thrift stores, and use discounts and coupons to get the best prices. Here is a list of essential camping supplies that you don’t want to do without:

  • Cooler: A cooler will keep food and drinks cold while camping. Choose one that is appropriate for the length of your trip and the amount of food and drinks you’ll need.
  • Headlamp or flashlight: A headlamp or flashlight is necessary for navigating your campsite at night.
  • First aid kit: A first aid kit is vital for treating minor injuries and illnesses that may occur while camping.
  • Water filter or purification tablets: Access to clean water is essential while camping. A water filter or purification tablets will ensure your drinking water is safe.
  • Insect repellent: Insects can be a nuisance while camping. Insect repellent will help keep them away.
  • Multi-Tool or knife: A multi-tool or knife is useful for a variety of tasks while camping, such as preparing food, cutting rope, and repairing gear.
  • Clothing: Make sure you know what the weather will be while you are camping, and bring the right clothes. No need to buy anything new – the trees and rocks don’t care how you look.
  • Charcoal: As long as your camping site has a fire pit or grill and allows open fires, charcoal will allow you to cook your meals for next to nothing.
  • Wood: Not all campsites have readily available wood, and many of them restrict wood gathering. Ideally, gathering and splitting your own wood saves the most money. However, if you can’t do that, you can usually get camp-ready wood locally for cheap.

Eating While Camping

When it comes to food while camping on a budget, the biggest tip we can give you is to prepare your meals ahead of time. This will cut down on the amount of gear you need to bring. In addition, if your meals are ready-to-eat or even just ready to heat, you can leave the extra dishes, cutlery, and spices at home.

Preparing your meals ahead of time will also save you a lot of time on cleanup.

For heating your food, opt for charcoal or wood in the firepit. Again, there is no need to spend a bunch of money on a camp stove. After all, what’s a camp without a fire? We also suggest that you choose meals that can be cooked in one pot. One-pot meals are easy to make, require minimal cleanup, and can be cooked on a camp stove or fire.

Consider cheap supper dishes like goulash, chili, or beans and rice. For lunch, good old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches taste great in the outdoors. And some fruit and muffins make an easy breakfast to start the day. You can also make pancakes over the fire if you want to get really fancy.

Camping on a shoestring budget can be done easily, after all. When you get to the heart of it, camping is about getting away and into nature. It’s about living on the bare minimum and disconnecting from our stress and our screens. Sure, you need tents, bedding, and food, but if you keep it to only the necessities, you still have an incredible camping experience. Because the main attraction, peace and nature, is free.

Digital nomads need something that can be done from anywhere in the world and doesn’t require a lot of start-up costs. They also need to do something that keeps them in touch with people and allows them to make new connections. Podcasting fits the bill and is a really fun way to become an online influencer.  For the second article in our Digital Nomad series, we will give you all the information you need to get started podcasting, from equipment to choosing a topic to recording and editing your episodes.

Do you need a refresher on what it means to be a digital nomad? A digital nomad is someone who uses technology to make a living, often while traveling or living in different places. They are usually self-employed or work for companies that allow them to work remotely.

Why Start a Podcast?

Starting a podcast is an excellent way to gain recognition and build a personal brand. It’s a great way to demonstrate your expertise, showcase your personality, and engage with a larger audience. Podcasts are also an excellent form of passive revenue. According to WiredClip, “Typically, a podcaster with around 10,000 downloads per episode can expect to earn somewhere between $500 to $900. Very successful podcasts can earn much more.”

Podcasts are also a great way to build relationships with people in other fields. You can connect with other leaders in your industry, build your network, and maximize your potential. They are an effective way to start conversations with your audience and engage them in exciting topics. You can also use podcasts as a platform to showcase your skills and gain visibility in your chosen industry.

What Podcasting Equipment Do You Need?

Having the right podcasting equipment can make the difference between a professional podcast and an amateur one. While you don’t need the latest and greatest equipment (or the most expensive), having the right tools will help ensure your podcasts sound professional. Here is what you will need to get started:

At a minimum, you’ll need a microphone and a recording device like a laptop, phone, or tablet. Then, once you get your podcast going and you are loving it, you can invest in a quality standalone microphone.

Audio editing software will also be necessary. You can use basic and free software like Audacity. To record remotely, you’ll need a streaming platform. And there are many podcasting platforms that also offer audio editing. Here are some of the most popular free streaming platforms:

  • Podbean – This platform is a simple and effective tool for creating, promoting, and monetizing your podcast. It offers everything you need to start and run a successful podcast.
  • Buzzsprout – Podcast hosting is easy with Buzzsprout. They provide simple and practical tools, as well as free instructional resources and exceptional customer service.
  • Speaker – This all-in-one audio creator’s tool lets you create and distribute your podcasts and offers many monetization options.

Shortly after getting your podcast established, you’ll also need some accessories. Investing in a good microphone stand, good headphones, and a good pop filter will go a long way in helping you achieve a professional sound. In addition, invest in a mixer, either analog or digital, to further optimize the sound quality.

Choosing the Topic for Your Podcast

One of the most important things about a podcast is the topic. This can be anything that you’re passionate about or that you think would be interesting to your audience. Choose a topic that you can talk about for a long time without getting bored. Here are a few tips to help you choose a subject for your first podcast:

  • Pick a topic that you’re passionate about. This will make it easier for you to keep coming up with new episodes. You are going to need a lot of material for regular podcasting, so choose something you love and know a lot about.
  • Do your homework. See what’s currently trending and what isn’t. Do a bit of market research to see what there is a desire for. Look for the right “niche” and stick to it.
  • Avoid controversial topics. You don’t want to alienate potential listeners with controversial subject matter. After you get some experience and a larger audience, a little controversy may not be a bad thing, but in the beginning, it will limit how many people tune in.

How to Record and Edit Your Podcast

It is easy to record a podcast, but it takes a bit of experience to produce a high-quality podcast. Here’s how to get started:

Choose the right location

When choosing the location for your recording, it is essential to consider your environment. First, choose an area with little noise or distractions. For the digital nomad, this can be anywhere you won’t be interrupted. You can also invest in noise cancellation accessories and may be able to edit out some background noises with your audio editing software.

Set up your equipment

When setting up your recording equipment, make sure to adjust the levels on your mixer. Make sure that your microphone is placed at the proper distance and that it is correctly angled. Consider using a pop filter to reduce background noise.

Record the podcast

When recording, it is important to speak slowly and clearly. Don’t rush, and be sure to pause around key points. If you are recording remotely, ensure your audio is clear and the connection is stable. Remember, it’s not live, so don’t be nervous. You can pause and restart at any time.

Edit the podcast

Use your audio editing software and remove any extra noise or dead air. Consider using audio compression to make your podcast sound more professional. You can also add effects and music to add more drama. Finally, be sure to encode or master the podcast to a suitable format, such as an MP3.

How To Promote Your Podcast

Once you have created your podcast, the next step is to promote it. Here are some easy steps to help get your podcast out there:

  • Set up your podcast website – Create a website for your podcast and share the URL of your website with your listeners. Include a link to your podcast so that listeners can easily find it.
  • Share your podcast on social media – Share your podcast on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This will help you gain more listeners.
  • Upload your podcast to podcast directories – Upload your podcast to podcast directories such as Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, TuneIn, Stitcher, and more.
  • Reach out to influencers – As a digital nomad, networking is essential. So reach out to influencers in your niche and ask them to share your podcast.
  • Run ads – Create ads for your podcast on platforms such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter. This will help you reach a larger, more relevant audience.
  • Monetize through your streaming platform – Many podcast streaming platforms offer upgrades for monetizing. This can be an excellent way to get your podcast noticed.

Closing Thoughts on Starting Your Own Podcast

Starting a podcast doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. With some basic equipment, a little homework, a great topic, and some effort, you can make podcasting part of your digital nomad lifestyle. And after some time and dedication, you could make some money too!

]]>
It’s the digital age, and the classic American dream is changing. In many cases, we are no longer saving up to buy our first home but rather our first RV. And instead of settling down, people are looking to hit the road and see other parts of the world.

More and more businesses are focusing their sights online and closing their brick-and-mortar operations. This allows many people to complete their jobs almost 100% online. And that means we don’t have to stay in one place anymore. Instead, we can go virtually anywhere we want!

In the first article in our Digital Nomad series, we will explain what a digital nomad is and its benefits. And we’ll give you a basic idea of how to embrace this new lifestyle.

What Is a Digital Nomad?

A digital nomad is someone who works remotely (from anywhere in the world), using the internet to make money. They are generally entrepreneurs and freelancers who are location-independent.

This digital nomad lifestyle offers the flexibility to live and work from anywhere without having to commute to an office or specific location. For example, some travel the US in an RV staying in campgrounds. Other digital nomads may spend time in different countries, moving as often as they please. They often embrace a minimalist lifestyle and prioritize experiences and exploration over material possessions. The jobs held by digital nomads can vary widely. Some examples include:

  • Web development and design
  • Social media management and marketing
  • Online tutoring and teaching
  • Graphic design and illustration
  • Virtual assistance and administrative support
  • Translation and interpretation
  • Digital marketing and advertising
  • E-commerce and online sales
  • Software and app development

While some of these internet-based jobs are freelance, others can be company employment. People living the digital nomad life are also not limited to one job or industry. They have the freedom to work how, when, and where they want. They can take on as many side gigs as they would like. For example, many digital nomads adopt side hustles like taking online surveys for money. Getting paid to take surveys is a great way to afford some of the little extras, like lunch or tickets to a museum. And surveys for cash can help add to your savings as well.

The Benefits of Living as a Digital Nomad

The Benefits of Living as a Digital Nomad are plenty. From freedom to personal growth, it’s easy to see why this flexible way of life appeals to many people. So let’s look at some of the benefits:

Freedom and Flexibility

Because they can work remotely, digital nomads can work and live wherever they want. And jobs like writing or graphic design can be done on their own schedule, giving them flexibility.

Creativity and Fun

Working from a different country every month can open up new perspectives. This helps to create an inspiring atmosphere that fuels creativity and encourages innovation in one’s work.

Tax Advantages

Depending on the regulations in the country they choose to work in, digital nomads may be able to reduce their tax burden, giving them more disposable income.

Cost-Effective

Digital nomads can often save money on living expenses by living in countries with a lower cost of living. This can allow them to stretch their budget further and live a more comfortable lifestyle.

Cultural Immersion

By traveling the world, digital nomads can fully immerse themselves in different cultures and experience new ways of life. A better understanding of the world and other lifestyles can lead to personal growth, creativity, and even happiness.

Increased Productivity

Many digital nomads find that they are more productive when working remotely. They typically have fewer distractions and can perform their jobs during their most productive hours. Many people also find that they can get more done without the boss “hanging over their shoulder,” as they say.

Networking Opportunities

Digital nomads often get to meet many other like-minded individuals. They can build a network of contacts around the world. This means new business opportunities, collaborations, and friendships.

Digital Nomad Jobs

There are many wireless jobs you can do as a digital nomad. Many successful people who live this lifestyle work more than one wireless gig. Here are some of the most popular jobs and careers for digital nomads:

Web Development/Design: This job involves designing, building, and maintaining websites for individuals or organizations. It is an excellent choice for digital nomads because it can be done remotely.

Online Tutoring/Teaching: There are good opportunities for digital nomads to become online teachers or tutors. This can include private tutoring or working for a company.

Virtual Assistant: As a virtual assistant, you support businesses with administrative duties and customer service. Tasks include answering emails, helping with customer queries, scheduling meetings, and more. The amount of companies hiring for these types of positions is growing rapidly.

Content Writing/Copywriting: Content writing or copywriting is one of the most lucrative options for digital nomads. There are many ways to make money as a content writer. While it can take some time and effort to generate an income from writing, it can be ideal for the digital nomad because it offers freedom and flexibility.

Social Media Management: Many companies hire digital nomads to handle their social media accounts. This involves creating content, curating posts, engaging with customers, and more.

How To Become a Digital Nomad

Being a digital nomad isn’t for everyone, of course. However, for those who love the open road and enjoy not being tethered to one location, it can be an awesome way of life. Here are the most significant factors to consider when deciding if the digital nomad life is for you:

  1. Get disconnected: If you are already working from home, you are well on your way to being a digital nomad. If not, the first step is determining how you will generate income. To put it simply, you will need to pursue an internet-based job.
  1. Save Money: You will need to save up as much capital as possible before starting your journey as a digital nomad. Whether you choose to live out of an RV or travel to another country, the commute is going to cost you. Having a good amount of saved funds will safeguard you against unexpected expenses or emergencies as well.
  1. Pack it Up: Perhaps the most challenging part of going from your current lifestyle to that of a digital nomad is packing it up. You will have to decide whether to sell your belongings or put them in storage. Will you be selling your home or renting it out? What can you take with you, and what has to stay? While this step is challenging and scary, remember that it is also very exciting and entirely possible!

Closing Thoughts

Digital nomadism is a great way to experience freedom, culture, and fun. Whether you are a freelancer looking to take your skills and talents on the road or an aspiring digital entrepreneur, the advantages are plentiful. Besides the obvious comfort and convenience associated with a digital nomad lifestyle, the ability to be your own boss, choose the roles and projects you wish to work on, and even work from remote locations are unparalleled.

Taking time off is essential for your mental and physical health, happiness, and productivity. Getting away from the daily grind and seeing new things can lift your spirits and renew your mind in a major way. But it can often feel like a vacation is a luxury you can’t afford. In reality, vacationing is not just for those with money to spare. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get away for a while. Early preparation, budgeting, and timing can all make for a less costly trip. Let’s look at the best ways to vacation on a budget.

Start Planning Early

The earlier you start planning your vacation, the more time you have to save money. Traveling costs fluctuate with demand, and the cycle rises and falls as your travel dates get closer. Beginning your planning early lets you find reduced rates on lodging, flights, etc. In addition, watching prices ahead of time allows you to snag deals when the prices are low. We will go deeper into this in the section on timing. Planning ahead will also give you time to create a budget and make wise choices.

Create a Budget

Creating a vacation budget is vital to vacationing stress-free without financial consequences. And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here is the easiest way to create your vacation budget:

  • Your first step is determining the highest amount you can spend from start to finish. Look at your standard monthly budget and see where you can cut costs. For example, take your entertainment allotment and put that money away for your vacation fund. If you have any extra savings, you could also use a portion of that.
  • Once you know how much you can spend, you can decide where to go. Transportation and lodging are the main factors here. Do you have enough to pay for flight tickets and a hotel? Or is driving to the nearest state park for a few nights of camping more suited to your budget? If you choose to fly, remember to factor in transportation to and from the airport and while you are at your destination.
  • The third step is to determine the amount of time you want to vacation. How much time you can afford to take off work is a major determinant. The other is lodging costs. Even if you choose to camp for your vacation, most places charge a fee.
  • After you know how much you can spend, where you are going, and how long you will be there, you can budget for food, souvenirs, and entertainment. *extra tip: Google Trips gives you “on a budget” lists of nearby food and attractions.
  • Lastly, set up a separate savings account for your vacation fund. This can be as simple as opening a free savings account and transferring funds from your checking account into it each month.

Set Limits

Once you know what your vacation budget is, you can set limits. Setting a daily limit is an excellent way to vacation on a budget. Taking your overall vacation budget and breaking it down per day is less overwhelming and will help you stay within your means.

One method is to make a series of envelopes with each day of your vacation written on them. Use just the cash inside the envelope for that day, and if you have any of it left, put it in the envelope for the following day. If cash isn’t your style, you can use prepaid debit cards. Then, write the vacation day on them with a marker.

Remember that unforeseen things can easily come up when you are away from home. So do bring your credit card or checking account debit card, but only use it for emergencies.

Timing

When you choose to travel can make a big difference in cost. This relates to flights, hotels, car rentals, and even tours. For example, according to Expedia, the best day of the week to book flights is Sunday.

Taking your vacation during the offseason is another excellent way to do it on a budget. Each location has a peak season when tourism is high, making prices for everything higher. For example, Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are more expensive to visit in the winter, while winter trips to Utah’s Zion National Park are cheaper. Off-season vacationing can save money on flights, lodging, tours, attractions, and even dining.

If you are flying to your vacation destination, Google has some excellent apps to help you know the best travel times. One of these is Google Flights. It features a cost tracker alert system that will email you when fares drop. In addition, Google Flights will show you how the pricing has changed over the last several months and inform you when the price will rise shortly or will not fall anymore.

Stay Close To Home

Mileage and time off are considerable factors in how much a vacation can cost. Choosing a destination close to home can save you a lot of money.

Flight tickets alone can be the most expensive part of a trip. If you stay within driving distance, you can cut out the cost of flights and have your vehicle for transportation once there. Even if you do choose to fly, the further away you go, the more it will cost.

Vacationing close to home also means you can take less time off. It’s much easier to get back before the weekend is over if you don’t have a full day or two of travel time ahead of you.

Camp

If you choose to stay closer to home, consider camping. Camping is cheap and one of the most cost-effective ways to vacation. If you love the outdoors and are headed somewhere warm, this can be as relaxing and refreshing as staying at a hotel. From national and state parks to private campgrounds, there are beautiful places to set up your tent. Many of them include amenities like electricity, showers, and pools. And if you want to save a buck and have no problem roughing it, some states like Utah have BLM land where you can camp primitively for free. Of course, make sure you do your research first, so you don’t end up pitching your tent somewhere illegally.

Camping not only saves on lodging costs but food and transportation too. It’s no secret that making your own meals is much cheaper than eating out. While it takes more time and preparation, you started planning early for a good reason. Transportation is also more affordable when camping because you already have your car.

Skip The Tours

There’s nothing like getting out and about in a brand-new city. But how much of that checking out can you do by yourself? Sight-seeing tours are expensive, and with the information readily available online now, it’s easy to conduct your excursion absolutely free instead of paying for a guided tour. In addition, apps like TripAdvisor and Spotted by Locals can help you see the best of your vacation spots for free.

Closing Thoughts

Vacations don’t need to be pricey. Whether you’re a getaway veteran or a traveling rookie, it’s easy to save money on trips by planning early and keeping an eye on costs. In addition, tips like vacationing during the offseason and skipping the tours can cut expenses, enabling you to vacation on a budget.

Six Additional Tips for Vacationing on the Cheap:

  1. Avoid the tourist traps. Instead, look for out-of-the-way shops and activities.
  2. Talk to the locals. Be bold and ask around for the best cheap places to eat or stay. Residents will have the best recommendations.
  3. Eat in. Most hotels have microwaves and mini-fridges. Instead of going to a restaurant, head to the local supermarket. Grab some frozen or premade meals and eat at the hotel. Purchase sandwich stuff for lunch and milk and cereal for breakfast. (Don’t forget to pack some plates, bowls, and utensils if you plan to do this).
  4. Enjoy nature. No matter where you visit, there will always be free stuff to do. There are parks, trails, and scenic spots that don’t cost a dime. Seek out these places and make a day of it. Spending time in nature is the best way to reset while on vacation.
  5. Use public transportation. If you visit a major metropolitan area, ditch the car and save on gas by using the local bus or subway to get around. It’s cheaper, saves on parking, and gives you a different perspective.

“Travel hacking” is a relatively new concept. But if you are an avid traveler, have credit cards, or both, you should definitely look into this unique practice. Travel hacking involves using different credit cards to redeem travel points or rewards, and it truly couldn’t be any easier than it is right now.

If you want to learn more about travel hacking, maximizing your credit card rewards, and taking trips for free, keep reading to get the whole scoop.

What is Travel Hacking?

Travel hacking is the concept of opening up credit cards and using them specifically for the purpose of redeeming their welcome bonus and/or travel-based rewards points. For example, with some cards, you might get thousands of miles in flight points just for opening up the card, with the potential for thousands more as you continue spending money on the card. Sometimes, you can accumulate free flights, hotels, and more just by spending money and using your credit card wisely.

How Do You Travel Hack?

In the following section, we’ll discuss the steps involved in travel hacking and what you need to do to start travel hacking for yourself. If you want to know how to open up credit cards and start travel hacking in real-time, here are all the details.

Figure Out Your Ultimate Goals

To begin, you’ll need to figure out what your ultimate travel goals are when it comes to hacking your trips. For example, do you want to be able to take a huge family vacation at the end of next year? Do you and your partner want to go on short weekend trips over the next few months? Do you want to do some solo getaways? You’ll need to consider your options and desires before deciding how to travel hack most efficiently.

Get A Travel Credit Card(s)

After you know what the most critical travel perks are to you (frequency of redeeming, flight miles, hotel points, etc.), you’ll need to apply for one or more credit cards. Travel hacking is only possible if you have a credit card, since you won’t get the points you need through rewards or loyalty programs elsewhere. There are many things you should look for when considering which card to get, including:

Large Welcome Bonus

A large welcome bonus is absolutely essential for travel hacking, and it will make your free flights or hotels come that much easier. A welcome bonus is just a bonus you get for opening the card, which can be a massive amount of flight or hotel points. However, be sure that when you open the card, you know the spending amount required to redeem your welcome bonus. Usually, it’s a certain amount of money in a particular time frame.

Low Spending Minimum

Since welcome bonuses typically require you to spend a certain amount of money within the first few months, you will want to look for a card with a smaller spending minimum. That way, you will likely be able to use the card for the things you buy anyway (groceries, gas, etc.). You don’t want to spend too much money on your card to the point where you are unable to pay it off, so look for a smaller spending minimum.

Category Bonus(es)

All of us typically have a few categories we tend to spend more money on. For some, it’s clothes shopping, while for others, it might be eating out, entertainment, or groceries. Whatever your categories are, look for credit cards with specific category bonuses in the areas you typically spend the most on. For example, some cards might give you triple points on gas or entertainment. This will help you earn and redeem points faster!

Specific Travel Perks

Of course, when travel hacking, you want to look for credit cards that offer specific travel perks. There are many credit cards that make this obvious, labeling themselves as “travel credit cards.” However, there are many variations between these cards, as some might focus on hotel points instead of flight points, while others’ flight points might be restricted to certain airlines or locations. Whatever perks they have, make sure they align with your ultimate travel goals before signing up.

Low Annual Fees

You’ll also want to ensure that the credit card you sign up for has low annual fees, meaning there aren’t extremely high costs for keeping the card open year-to-year. Some cards have notably higher fees than others. It all depends on how you can weigh that cost against your expected benefits.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

When you are on vacation in another country, you don’t want your credit card spending to rack up even more additional fees or accrue more costs. Unfortunately, foreign transaction fees can seriously mess with your credit card statement, especially if you make many smaller purchases. So, before you go on trips or even sign up for the card, make sure your credit card doesn’t have any foreign transaction fees.

Make Sure Your Welcome Bonus is Earned

Of course, to redeem your welcome bonus (as we’ve mentioned), you must spend enough money to earn it. The amount you need to spend will depend on the card you sign up for, but usually, it’s around $1,000 to $3,000 within the first one to three months. If you don’t earn your welcome bonus, you have rendered your travel hacking card partially useless, so stay up-to-date with how much you need to spend to redeem your rewards.

Maximize Category Spending

As we mentioned before, category bonuses can be one of the most essential parts of earning enough rewards points to travel hack. Therefore, maximize your category spending (where there are bonuses) as much as possible! For example, instead of using your debit card for gas, use only your credit card for gas if you have a gas bonus and then pay it off using your debit card at the end of the month so as to not accrue interest.

Redeem Travel Rewards

Once you rack up the points, ensure you redeem all of your travel rewards in a timely fashion! Many companies don’t want you to know how much you can actually save by travel hacking, so they aren’t going to remind you! If you don’t keep track, you may forget about your rewards balance, and your points will expire. Keep detailed records of where your travel rewards points are going and actually use them!

Enjoy Your Trips!

Once you redeem your rewards, enjoy! You have basically cracked the code to the best-kept secret in budget traveling. On your trips, take the time to relax, spend time with family, or simply enjoy your own company. Travel is a great way to enrich your mind, body, and spirit, and figuring out how to travel for cheap can be that much more rewarding. Once you return from your trip, you can start accumulating even more points and start planning out where your next hacked trip will be.

Can’t afford a summer vacation? You’re not alone. Many Americans— especially in our current economy—are finding it difficult to afford to take their usual weeklong trips. Between rising prices of everything and transportation costs, many families are opting out of travel this year. It can be hard to beat inflation and still have a good time.

However, you don’t need to fly anywhere or pay for expensive hotels to get away from it all. Instead, you can have a “staycation” right where you live! New experiences don’t need to be expensive, and you can make great memories at home. So, if you’re feeling blue about not getting away this year, try one or more of these ideas to perk you up.

Host Your Own Cooking Class

Whether it’s just in your own home with your family or you invite some friends, hosting your own cooking class is one great way to have a “staycation” and make some new, unique memories. Pick a recipe you’ve always wanted to make, or try some new cuisine from a different country or culture. Alternatively, do a potluck and have everyone bring one course each for a huge feast.

Have A Spa Night

This idea is beneficial for those who need a relaxing staycation at home after a long, exhausting week or month. Spa vacations (or even going to a day spa) can be extremely expensive, but having a spa night at home can be both soothing and affordable. Go to your local drugstore and pick up some face masks, manicure and pedicure supplies, and some bubbles for your bath. Then, kick back, relax, and read a good book on this healing staycation.

Go To An Exercise Class

Typically, gyms will prompt you to purchase a full membership to take advantage of their classes. However, many gyms offer group fitness classes with an option to pay for one or two class sessions at a time. This way, you don’t have to commit to a full-priced membership to make fun new memories and get your sweat on. Additionally, if you have a local community center, check the schedule and see if there are any cheap dance classes or yoga classes you can join.

Take A Day-Trip

This idea is one of the more expensive on the list, especially if you consider rising gas prices right now, But sometimes you really need a total change of scenery. In this case, a day trip is great when you can’t have a full-blown vacation. You don’t have to go far; just find a nearby spot you have never visited and start exploring! Walk around, visit local shops and restaurants, or check out the area’s natural beauty. Then, come home at night, so you don’t need to pay for a hotel!

Go Camping in Your Yard

Camping is a blast, but unless you are camping on a budget, it can also be expensive, considering all the gear and the nightly cost of traditional campgrounds. With camping, you typically need to buy things like flashlights, warm clothes, blankets, and more to get everything you’ll need to camp. Instead of renting a campsite, try camping in your backyard. Simple two-person tents are cheap, or you could borrow one from a friend. And if you don’t have gear, no program. Just bring some old pillows and blankets from the house.

Curate A “Film Festival”

If you’re a movie lover, you have probably always wanted to attend a film festival screening in a big city to see a showcase of many new movies. However, you can do this in your own home as well! Choose a franchise, such as Harry Potter or Star Wars. Or pick a handful of new movies you’ve wanted to watch and screen them back to back (alongside some snacks, of course).

See A Local Performance

If you live in a major city or are close to one, there’s a good chance there is a local concert, dance performance, or play happening pretty much every weekend. Usually, to find these things, you just need to look at the “events” section on Facebook or local postings around town. Another great idea is to visit your city’s chamber of commerce, where you should be able to pick up some flyers or brochures advertising events in your area.

Take An Art Class

Like the last tip, you will likely have to seek out events like art classes if you want to find them locally. However, many artists will offer classes from their studios or local community centers for introductory painting, sculpting, or digital design lessons. In addition, nearby colleges or universities often offer workshops or one-day classes in fine arts.

Swap Houses

One unique and exciting way to have a staycation is to swap houses with a friend or family member for the night or weekend! Obviously, you’ll need to have a lot of trust in the person you trade places with, but doing this can allow you to feel like you’re staying in a hotel or Airbnb without having to shell out any cash. Use each other’s kitchens, sleep in each other’s guest rooms, and make it fun! It can be incredibly refreshing to get out of the house, even if it’s just a few streets over.

Volunteer

While volunteering might not be what you typically think of as a staycation, it is gratifying to give back to others in your community. For example, serve meals at a soup kitchen, help a local sustainability organization, or volunteer with youth at your community center. Giving back to your community is one of the best ways to be an upstanding citizen. Plus, your community will be better off because of it!

See The Outdoors

If you don’t live in a major metropolitan area, one excellent staycation idea is to take a couple of days to get out and explore the nature around you. Walk down a long hiking trail, swim in a local lake, or do some stargazing in a field. Wherever you are, there is undoubtedly some form of natural scenery you can explore. Additionally, you can get some exercise along the way!

Go To A Local Sports Game

It’s likely that no matter where you are, there is either a major professional sporting team or a local college or university sports team nearby! So whether you live next to a small local college or a massive NFL stadium, going to a local sports game allows you to see the sights of your city while rooting for a team that matters to you! So get a beer and a hot dog, sit in the stands, and cheer on your local players. Ideally, your staycation will be even better if they win!

New Experiences Don’t Need To Be Expensive

Having a staycation is all about making new memories and having new experiences without blowing your budget. Sure it’s fun to take your children or significant other on a massive, expensive vacation. However, the most essential part of a vacation is relaxing together! So if this isn’t a good year for you to go away, try a few of the tips on our list and do some things to make the summer of 2022 memorable.

Buy Second-Hand Gear or Borrow

Let’s start first with the equipment. Camping gear can be super expensive. But there are three ways to avoid spending hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars on gear for your upcoming camping trip. The first is to invest in some second-hand equipment. Scour your local thrift stores for items like sleeping bags, tents, portable stoves, tarps, chairs, and more. Depending on what has been recently donated, you can find some real treasures!

The second option is to borrow. If you have friends or extended family who enjoy camping, see if they have any gear they would be willing to part with for your trip. Borrowing gear is an excellent option because it’s free! Just be sure to bring everything back in mint condition.

The third idea is to check for “free” or bartering groups online. There are many such groups across the country. And you will likely find some in your own neighborhood. These groups exist to keep unwanted items out of the landfill and match people with things they need. Check out sites like Nextdoor and Freecycle to see what’s in your area.

Bring Regular Bedding From Home

Bringing your own bedding from home is another way to save money on your camping adventure. Rather than buying pillows or sleeping bags just for camping, bring the things you already own! You’ve probably already got everything you need for you and your family to sleep comfortably on your trip.

If you buy bedding supplies specifically for camping, you may never use them again. And that’s a lot of cash down the drain. On the other hand, all it takes is a good wash cycle to get any dirt and germs from camping out of your home bedding.

Bring Your Own Food/Drinks

Going to local restaurants or buying food from the camp’s general store can add up fast. Some campgrounds are well stocked with snack bars and eateries. But that doesn’t mean you should visit them.

Rather than blowing your budget on meals and snacks, bring your own food from home and cook at your campsite. If you don’t have a way to keep your items cold, check out our homemade cooler idea!  Besides, half the fun of camping is cooking over an open fire or camp stove!

Plan Meals Carefully

This idea goes hand-in-hand with the last tip. Be sure to plan your camping meals carefully when bringing food with you from home. You usually don’t buy groceries for the week without some kind of meal plan, right? The same goes for camping. Bringing a bunch of random food without planning how to prepare and eat it is a waste.

Instead, plan simple healthy meals and snacks that will leave your family feeling full and satisfied. This is not the time to splurge on junk food. That will only leave everyone irritable and with low energy. Camping can be a strenuous activity. So be sure to treat food as fuel!

Cook Meals Over A Fire

Bringing food from home requires that you have a way to cook it. You might have the money to invest in a portable gas stove or grill. But you can learn to cook over a fire instead. Cooking your meals over a fire can help your camping experience feel more rustic and authentic. And that can make the trip feel more memorable for you and your family.

The easiest foods to cook over a fire include:

  • Hot dogs
  • Corn on the cob
  • Potatoes
  • Kebabs
  • Pancakes
  • Grilled sandwiches
  • Canned beans, soup, and chili
  • Eggs and bacon or sausage

No need to run out and buy a camping cookbook, either. You can find lots of free and delicious campfire recipes just by doing a simple internet search.

Bring Your Own Firewood

To cook your meals over a fire, you will need a way to actually make the fire. Many campgrounds will offer firewood for sale, but it will usually come at a steep price, and it may not be the best quality.

Instead of risking the possibility of breaking your budget on firewood, or worse—not being able to find any—bring your own. Of course, you will want to check the regulations where you will be camping first. Some states do not allow visitors to bring firewood over state lines. This is to prevent the spread of insects and pests.

Forage Or Fish

Foraging for your meals can also help your camping experience feel more authentic and rustic. Whether that means you go fishing for your dinner, pick berries, or forage for some edible mushrooms, finding your own food can feel very rewarding. Plus, it’s a great way to teach your kids about nature and responsibility.

It goes without saying you should be knowledgeable about wild foods before heading out on a foraging excursion. Unfortunately, not everything that looks edible is. At the very least, borrow a book on wild edibles from your local library before using this idea.

Camp Somewhere With Natural Activities

Many people go camping and spend hundreds of dollars on expensive entrance fees at National Parks and other activities. Rather than spending lots of money to get access to nature or entertainment, find a camping spot with many natural activities. For example, camp near some hiking trails, a lake, or a mountain you can climb.

Choose Campgrounds With Included Facilities

Many campgrounds will charge you exorbitant fees for entrance regardless of their facilities. If you want the most bang for your buck, seek out campgrounds with facilities included in their entrance fees. For example, many campgrounds will include showers, tennis courts, hiking trails, swimming ponds, or clubhouses with televisions. If you need to spend the money for an entrance fee at a campground, make sure your money is worth it for everything you will get out of the location.

Camp During the Off-Season

Rather than going camping during the busy summer months or on federal holidays, try camping during the off-season to save money and avoid the big crowds. During the shoulder seasons of spring and fall, campsites often charge less yet offer the same amenities. This tip is especially great for those who don’t like rustic camping and are looking for high-quality facilities at an affordable price.

Avoid National Parks And Popular Attractions

As we mentioned earlier, National Parks can have expensive entrance fees that you can avoid by camping somewhere else. While National Parks are incredibly appealing on a natural level, consider whether you could just drive to National Parks during the day while camping somewhere else at night. Additionally, there are many incredible natural landmarks that you can explore that don’t cost anything!
